Why summer is the most important time of year for your sales pipeline

By Niraj Kapur, 1st May, 2026

You've heard the excuses. Nobody is around. Call me after summer. Everyone is on holiday. If everyone was actually on holiday and nobody was around, the economy would collapse. It doesn't, because most people are still working - just with slightly fewer meetings in the diary.

Q4 is the biggest period of the year for most businesses. October, November and December mean everyone is pushing hard to hit target while simultaneously trying to work out what next year looks like. The pressure is real and the stakes are high.

Here's the problem. You won't hit your Q4 target if you start working towards it in October. The groundwork for a strong Q4 has to be laid before it arrives, and summer is when that work happens. Every successful business owner I've worked with knows this. Every talented entrepreneur I've spent time with knows this. Every salesperson I've coached one to one knows this. They work hard over summer, take a week or two off because rest matters and they come back sharper for it, and then they hit the ground running in September.

The question isn't whether to use the summer well. It's how.

Stand out when everyone else has gone quiet

Most people slow down over summer. Which means the bar for getting noticed drops considerably.

I send thank you cards to business connections during this period - proper cards, each with a personalised message. People rarely receive them, which is exactly why they work. Four of my clients received books in the post this summer because it was their birthdays. A book with a handwritten dedication takes time and costs money, and almost nobody is doing it. That's the point. A LinkedIn voice note or video works well too - anything that shows you've taken a moment to think about the other person rather than firing off another copy-and-paste message.

I also used the time to shoot a sales video about rock music - specifically, sales lessons learned from AC/DC. After a year of consistent effort on YouTube, that video brought in my first client from the channel. Consistency over summer, when most people have taken their foot off the gas, is what makes that kind of result possible. If you want to follow along, I upload new sales videos every week and there's no sales funnel attached to it.

Upskill while the pace is slower

Summer is one of the few times in the year when you can actually carve out space to learn something properly. I used it to work through Alex Hormozi's funnels course ahead of a September launch, study Benjamin Hardy's Rapid Transformation course, and re-read books I'd highlighted but never fully absorbed. I also kept working with my business coach Gail even though things were going well - maybe especially because things were going well.

Good coaching isn't just for when something is broken. It's for making sure what's working keeps working, and that you're ready for what's coming next. If imposter syndrome or confidence is something you're sitting with, summer is a good time to tackle it before the pressure of Q4 arrives.

Protect your mental health during the push

Comparison is a waste of energy. I don't measure my summer against other people's fancy holidays. I'm genuinely happy for them and I focus on what I can control. It took me years to get there, and it makes a real difference.

The Northern Irish coast is spectacular in summer and I was walking for thirty minutes at 8am and another thirty at 4pm, with a choice of beaches nearby. I also invested in a standing desk, which helped with both posture and focus more than I expected. Small things, but they add up.

You can't pour from an empty cup. The work you put in over summer matters, and so does how you look after yourself while you're doing it.

Plan now, not in October

Every day I see people stalling through fear and indecision, waiting for the economy to improve or for the right moment to arrive. The right moment is now. The people who invest in themselves and do the work in the quieter months are the ones who finish the year well.

If you're not sure where the gaps are in your sales approach - whether it's understanding what your prospects are actually thinking, dealing with ghosting and stalled conversations, or knowing how to follow up without annoying people - summer is the time to sort it out.

After all, if you don't invest in yourself, why would anyone else invest in you?
