Why referrals are vital for your sales strategy

By Niraj Kapur, 6th December 2024

Are you getting ghosted right now? Prospects going quiet, emails disappearing into the void, people telling you to try again in a few months?

You're not alone. I hear this from a lot of people I speak to. And when I dig into why it's happening, the same reasons tend to come up. The initial outreach wasn't strong enough. The follow-up is inconsistent, or non-existent. Or the person they're speaking to isn't actually the decision-maker - just someone they get on well with.

So how do you keep generating sales when cold outreach feels like shouting into a field? Let me show you two clients I worked with recently, because the contrast tells the story better than anything else.

How referrals convert faster than cold outreach

The first client came via a recommendation. I was referred to them on a Monday. Ten days later I was paid and in their office delivering sales training.

That's what a warm referral does. The trust is already there before you've said a word. I've written about why referrals should be a core part of your sales strategy.

What a cold lead actually looks like in practice

The second client came in cold via an enquiry on my website. Here's exactly how that played out, step by step, so you can see what persistence in sales genuinely looks like.

  • They sent an enquiry in September.
  • We had an introductory Zoom call. It went well and I uncovered what they needed.
  • I put together a proposal with two testimonials included.
  • I followed up. The brief had shifted - more sales training, less LinkedIn training.
  • New proposal, more testimonials.
  • The brief changed again. The MD decided they'd handle some of the training internally. They wanted me to work with their sister company instead.
  • New proposal created and sent.
  • Followed up. Heard nothing. Sent useful content in the meantime.
  • Still nothing. Kept sending valuable content.
  • The client came back, apologised - a lot had been going on. They'd found the content helpful. The format changed too; face-to-face wasn't going to work for scheduling reasons, so we moved to Zoom. I invoiced them.
  • Did a significant amount of prep for the training.
  • Got paid.
  • Delivered the training.

Thirteen touchpoints over thirteen weeks. If you're wondering how long you should realistically keep chasing a prospect, I've covered that too.

Why persistence in sales still wins

Both clients were a joy to work with. Both were wins I'm proud of. But they required very different amounts of time and energy to get there.

The referral was quick. The cold lead took patience, consistency, and a willingness to keep showing up without any guarantee it would go anywhere.

That's sales. Referrals make the job easier - not because you do less work, but because the groundwork has already been done for you by someone who trusts you enough to put their name behind you.

If you're not actively asking for referrals, you're making the whole process harder than it needs to be. When you do great work, ask. "Who in your network could benefit from what we've just done together?" Most happy clients will tell you - they just need to be asked.
